Product of the Week – Curly Kids Hair Care by Mixed Chicks

theboysandmixedchicks copyMy kids were blessed with beautiful curly hair. Though they both have very different textures. The oldest has dense and tight curls the youngest thin and wispy. Despite those differences, the Mixed Chick Kids Haircare products work for both of them. There are a few things I love about these products.

1. Paraben Free! What’s a paraben? Glad you asked. Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives by cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. They are primarily used for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution, makeup,[1] and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives. There is some concern in science and advocacy circles because Parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors (an average of 20 nanograms/g of tissue). Parabens have also displayed the ability to slightly mimic estrogen (a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancer).Another concern is that the estrogen-mimic aspect of parabens may be a factor in the increasing prevalence of early puberty in girls.

2. The Kids Shampoo is sulfate free and tear free and can double as a body wash. What’s the deal with sulfates? When you use a shampoo that contains sulfates, you strip away more than dirt and excess oil from your scalp. The sulfate also removes natural oils that your hair needs to stay healthy. The absence of natural oils can cause dry and itchy scalp, dandruff and frizzy hair. My boys curly hair is already pretty dry and nothing causes frizz like dry curls. Tip: Adults with curly hair use a clarifying shampoo every few washes or opt instead for a cleansing conditioner.

3. The Kids Conditioner really moisturizes well but doesn’t leave the boys hair oily¬† or sticky, which has been an issue with other kid products.

4. Kids Tangle-Tamer. My kids get to the barber (or mommy’s barber chair) more regularly these days so I’m not dealing with a lot of tangled curls. However, when they wake up in the morning their hair looks dry and frizzy. I love that this product comes in a spray bottle because with two boys who are often product resistant I can do a “spray-by!”¬† A couple of sprays and their curly hair looks shiny again and I can easily finger comb the curls it into place.

Overall two thumbs up for Mixed Chicks and their Kids Care line!
